Marcos Giron v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

Giron and Martinez have not played each other on the ATP Tour. This will be their first career meeting.

Giron Makes Second Round of Adelaide

Marcos Giron played in one of the most brutal matches of this brand new season, escaping the shackles of Richard Gasquet in the first round of Adelaide.

Giron and Gasquet put on a show last Sunday as the pair battled for three hours. Gasquet served for the match deep in the third set, but was broken and Giron went on to prevail 7-6 6-7 7-5 in an opening-day classic.

The American’s stay in Adelaide was, however, cut short. Despite getting two days of rest time, Giron lost in a three-set barnburner against a resurgent Alexei Popyrin.

Giron is playing in Auckland for the first time. And his Round-of-16 showing in Adelaide is already an improvement from last year when he failed to win a single match in three tournaments Down Under.

Martinez Makes Positive Start in Pune

Pedro Martinez started his season in Pune, India, where he competed at the Maharashtra Open for the first time. The Spaniard made a positive start at the ATP 250-event, reaching the quarterfinal of a hard court tournament for the second time in the last six months.

While Martinez has predominantly excelled on clay in his career, he played quite well in Pune, scoring wins over Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sebastian Baez. In both matches, he fought back from losing the first set to winning in three.

But he was no match for former World No. 14 Aslan Karatsev who thumped the Spaniard 6-1 6-2 in their one-sided quarterfinal. Martinez will certainly be looking for an improved performance with the Australian Open looming on the horizon.

Giron v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Martinez sits just one spot beneath Giron in the ATP rankings. But on hard courts the American’s level is miles ahead of his Spanish opponent.
