Baez Coming off Opening Loss in Pune

Featuring in the Pune Open last week, Baez did not have the greatest start to his season. After getting an opening round bye as the fourth seeded player, Baez fell in the second round to Pedro Martinez.

With both players preferring clay over other surfaces, it was no surprise neither really started off as a favourite but Baez looked like he held bit of an advantage when he took the first set.

From there on, however, the Argentinian 22-year-old fell away quickly as his Spanish opponent took full toll of his unforced errors. Martinez won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to knock Baez out.

Baez has only five career wins in hardcourt competitions at the highest level and he has lost 18 matches. He takes on a player who is ranked about 40 places behind him but prefers hardcourt surfaces.

Shelton Fails in Adelaide Qualification Endeavour

Last week Shelton was in Adelaide, attempting to make the main draw of the competition there. Playing James Duckworth in the first qualifier, Shelton started off a 11/20 favourite to come through in that encounter.

Things didn’t go his way though as the American fell to a straight-set loss to Duckworth, leaving his preparations for the Australian Open in bit of a jeopardy.

The good news for Shelton coming into this match is he hasn’t had to make it through the qualifiers for starters. Secondly, he takes on a clay-court specialist which should make his task slightly easier than it was last week.

Can he make it through to the second round here as he hunts for some serious practice entering into the  season’s first Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Baez v Shelton Prediction and Tip

Baez might be ranked higher than Shelton but it’s the American who starts off a favourite here with bet365 offering 1/2 for his win. Will go with that but for Baez to grab a set
