Tommy Paul v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

They have once played at the highest level and one other time on the Challenger circuit. O’Connell had won their Challenger meeting in 2019 before Paul clinched their opening round encounter at the 2021 French Open in a fifth set that had 18 games.

2022 Quarterfinalist Paul Kickstarts 2023

Paul had made it to the quarterfinal of this event last year and will hope he can do something similar or even better this week as he kick-starts his new year.

Having not featured in either the United Cup or any of the other ATP tournaments last week, this will be Paul’s chance to fine-tune his game in the lead-up to the Australian Open as well.

The 25-year-old American had hit his career-best ranking of 28th on the charts last season too after a string of solid performances leading up to the quarterfinal at the Montreal Masters. He would later make it to the third round at the US Open and end the year as a Paris Masters quarterfinalist too.

What’s surprising to note is that Paul made it to the semifinal at just one event last year – Delray Beach – and will hope he can turn that around quicker this year.

O’Connell Makes it Through as Lucky Loser

With a spate of withdrawals punctuating both ATP and WTA tournaments this week, many lucky losers are benefitting from the same and O’Connell has been one of them.

The Aussie had defeated Rinky Hijikata in the first qualifying round but then lost to fellow Aussie John Millman in the second round in straight sets. This was despite Millman being a 3/5 favourite coming into that encounter.

This follows a direct entry Millman had got into the Adelaide International 1 last week where he went down 6-4, 6-4 to Miomir Kecmanovic.

Can he now put up a decent showing against Paul, especially given what has gone about between them on their head to head.

Paul v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

Paul is an overwhelming favourite here at 2/5 and we expect him to come through. However, O’Connell’s fighting qualities might be in fore here and we could see a long-ish encounter.
