Marcos Giron v J.J. Wolf Head to Head

This will be their first meeting at the tour level.

They have met twice at the lower level with Giron winning both of those matches.

Giron Rallies Past Coria

Marcos Giron scarped past Argentina’s Federico Coria in the opening round of the Auckland Open on Tuesday.

The American lost serve on his very first service game, but broke back in the 10th game of the set to send it back on serve. The set was eventually decided in an up-and-down tiebreak, which was eventually won by the Argentine, who had made the main draw as a lucky loser.

In the second set, Giron found himself up a break on two occasions, but immediately squandered the advantage both the times. It was, however a third break in the second that allowed him to tie the match at one-set all.

The deciding set also saw plenty of breaks, with Coria going up a break twice this time. But Giron responded by getting the breaks back immediately. However, the American stepped on the accelerator in the final three games, racing to a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-5 victory in two hours and 38 minutes.

Giron converted half of the 14 break points that he held and saved half of the 10 that he faced in the match.

This was Giron’s third match of the season and interestingly all three have been close three-set affairs. He won a marathon against Richard Gasquet to start the season in Adeliade-1, but fell to Alexei Popyrin in the second round of his season opener. He has now won the opener in Auckland. Can he make it to the first quarterfinal of the year  with a win on Wednesday?

Wolf Stuns Mannarino

World No. 66 J.J. Wolf kicked off his 2023 season with a straight sets win over eighth seed Adrian Mannarino.

Wolf didn’t face a single break point in the first set, but he held five of them and capitalised on one to draw first blood.

The second set saw Mannarino start with a break but Wolf broke back immediately. The world no. 43 then broke again in the middle of the set to go 3-2 up and served for the set at 5-4. However, the American was in no mood to take the set to the decider. He broke the Frenchman to draw level for a second time in the set.

In the ensuing tiebreak, Mannarino was the first to get a minibreak, but once again Wolf came back. He won five points in a row to find himself on three match points. The Frenchman saved one, but Wolf converted the next to win the contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Last year, the 24-year-old had reached his maiden ATP final in Florence in October, but missed out on the title after falling to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Overall Wolf had a 43-29 record, including tournaments at all levels.

Marcos Giron v J.J. Wolf Prediction and Tip

Giron has won both their previous matches at the qualifier and Challenger levels and those wins came in 2019 in Cleveland and 2021 in Cincinnati. So he will have the psychological advantage. Giron also comes into the contest having spent fair amount of time on court in 2023. But with Wolf starting ona high expect him to test Giron.

This could be another three-setter for Giron, but he should eventually edge past Wolf.
