Ruud Looking to Recapture the Form of 2022
Top seed Casper Ruud will begin his Auckland challenge in the second round on Wednesday after he received a first-round bye.
The Norwegian, ranked no. 3 in the world, is coming off two exceptional seasons, wining a total of 108 matches on the tour in 2021 and 2022 combined.
Last year, Ruud finished with a 51-22 record, winning three titles in Buenos Aires, Geneva and Gstaad. But it was his performances in the big events that not only made him one of the most dangerous current players on the tour but also propelled him to no. 2 in the world in September.
Ruud reached two Grand Slam finals, finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal in Roland Garros and to Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open.
He also made it to the final of the Miami Open, losing that to Alcaraz as well, and finished the year by reaching the title clash at the ATP Finals, only to finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic.
Ruud didn’t have a good run at the United Cup, winning his singles match against Thiago Monteiro of Brazil, but losing to Matteo Berretini in Norway’s tie against Italy.
With hopes of picking up from where he left last year, he will hope for a deep run in Auckland and look to get his campaign off to a quick start.

Djere Rallies Past Munar
Laslo Djere scored a remarkable come-from-behind win over Jaume Munar in the first round in Auckland on Tuesday.
The Serbian, ranked no. 70, had broken the Spaniard in the first game of the match, but Munar recovered soon and finished the first set by winning five games in a row.
Roles reversed in the second as Djere took charge right from the start of the set and dominated it till the end to tie the match at one-set all.
The third set was a nail-biting affair. Both players broke each other three times in the first 10 games of the set. Djere even missed out on a match point in the 10th game, as Munar broke serve to stay alive. But the Serbian didn’t miss out on the second match point that he had in the match in the deciding set tiebreak to clinch the contest 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The win was Djere’s second of 2023. He had won his first round match of the Pune Open against Alex Molcan but lost in the second round to Germany’s Maximilian Marterer.
Better known for his clay court game, Djere produced his best hard court result last year in Winston Salem, reaching the final of the tournament during a 21-25 season.
He won’t be the favourite against Ruud, but an upset on Wednesday can do his confidence a world of good.
Ruud v Djere Prediction and Tip
Ruud is the favourite in this contest. He is a superior player, has a much better record on the tour and, over the last one year, has established himself as a top hard court player. Expect the Norwegian to ease past Djere.
