David Goffin v Benoît Paire Head to Head
The two men have met five times before on the senior tour, and Paire leads their head to head series by three matches to two. Their first meeting on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch resulted for a win for Paire in 2012, and he followed that up with victory on clay in Bastad the following year.
Goffin pulled a match back in the 2016 Shanghai Masters, only for Paire to reassert himself the following year in Metz. However, Goffin did win their most recent encounter in Cincinnati last year, although he had to work hard for his win, which came in a tight three-setter.
Goffin – Pride of Belgium, but Can he Live up to Expectations
Goffin is the first male tennis player from Belgium to reach the ATP top ten, and is somewhat of a hero in his native land. The winner of four ATP senior tour titles he can be unpredictable on his day, but, in the past, has proved he can take on and beat the very best in the world.
On the singles front, 2019 has not been a great year for him so far, losing first time out in Doha, Montpellier and Rotterdam, and falling to Daniil Medvedev in the last 32 in Melbourne. However, he did win the doubles’ title in Doha with his partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
He had a first round bye in this tournament and it would be interesting to see how he goes up against a stiff opponent like Paire, this early.
Paire’s Attempt to Go Higher
Paire, who has been ranked as high as 18 in the world, is an entertainer on court. Known for the unpredictability of his game, he also likes to entertain the crowd with a series of trick shots, including drop shots that swerve back towards the net and angled drives that deviate wildly due to the spin that he puts on it.
Playing in front of a French crowd he is sure to have them on his side, and Goffin will need to be careful that he does not allow himself to lose concentration because of his antics.
He was a 6-4, 7-6 winner over Simone Bolelli in his opening round match but will find this second round encounter a tad more difficult than the first.
Goffin v Paire Predictions & Tips
Goffin is 6/13 (bet365) on to win with the bookmakers which, given their head to head record, may be slightly generous. Paire is 24/13 and, if he can keep his mind on the tennis, he may have a good chance.
