Sabalenka Coming off Adelaide Title Win

Despite Sabalenka ending the previous season ranked fifth in the world, she would have liked to done a lot better than she actually managed.

Sabalenka, after all, was coming into 2022 on the back of 10 WTA titles from the previous four seasons, spread evenly across them. For her to then win no titles in 2022 would have been a touch surprising.

The good news for the Belarusian player entering the season’s first Grand Slam is she seems to have corrected that. Taking part in the Adelaide International last week, Sabalenka followed up a first round bye with four successive wins to lift the trophy there.

And in doing so, Sabalenka did not lose a set, defeating Luidmilla Samsonova, Marketa Vondrousova, Irina Begu and Linda Noskova on her way to the win.

She has a potentially tricky opponent first up but should be confident enough to take her down.

Martincova Yet to Win a Main Draw Match in 2023

She has featured in two tournaments this year, in Auckland and Hobart, but Martincova hasn’t won a main draw encounter yet.

At the former, Martincova was bundled out in the first round by Julia Grabher despite starting out a 2/5 favourite. This was followed by couple of easy qualifier victories in Hobart but come the main draw and Martincova fell in three sets to Laura Siegemund.

Again, Martincova was 1/2 favourite in that encounter.

And that has been the crux of Martincova’s issues once she hit her career-best ranking of 40th in the world last year. Her performances have dropped consistently and had it not been for a quarterfinal appearance at Ostrava last year, she might have even fallen outside the top 80.

Which is why, Martincova will need a bit of a miracle to overcome Sabalenka in this opener.

Sabalenka v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka should have no major worries here as the odds of 1/10 suggest and we expect her to steamroll her opponent in straight sets.
