Ruud Struggling to Establish Form Again
Three titles last year, five in 2021 and two Grand Slam finals along with that – that was Ruud’s report card coming into this year. Not to mention, a career-best ranking of second in the world, having slipped a place to number three now.
Suddenly, in 2023, Ruud’s looked slightly out of sorts. The caveat here obviously is the sample size is that of three matches spread across two tournaments but Ruud would have liked to do a lot better at both, the United Cup and Auckland Open.
At the first, he did not waste too much time against clay-court specialist Thiago Monteiro but then crashed to a straight-set loss to Matteo Berrettini.
Coming into the Auckland Open as the top seed, Ruud had an opening round bye before losing to Laslo Djere in the second. That he fell to a defeat after being a set up and having gone into the encounter as a 1/5 favourite speaks volumes about the concerns around his form.
Can he kick-start things here with an easy win to dispel those fears?

Machac 0-2 in Main Draws This Year
Machac has already featured in a couple of tournaments this season and lost both main draw matches he’s played.
While the defeat to Frances Tiafoe at the United Cup was par for the course for the 115th-ranked Machac, he would loved to go a lot deeper into the Auckland Open.
Starting out as a qualifier there, Machac had sent Soon-woo Kwon packing from the tournament but then lost to the same opponent in the main draw. Kwon, entering the Auckland Open as a lucky loser won 6-4, 6-4 to relegate Machac to his second defeat of the season.
Machac has never been ranked better than 97th in the world but far as Grand Slams go, he has won a round at this tournament in both, 2021 and 2022. It looks like things could get a lot tougher this time around.
Ruud v Machac Prediction and Tip
While Ruud’s form is anything but red-hot, he takes on an opponent who hasn’t had much going his way at the highest level. He might take a set off Ruud but that’s as far as it will go.
