Moutet Reached Fourth Round of US Open Last Year

This will be Moutet’s fifth appearance in the main draw in Melbourne, and he has reached the second round in each of the past two seasons.

Last year he won two Challenger tour titles in France and Poland respectively, both on clay, and beat Cameron Norrie at the Paris Masters.

However, the highlight of his season came at the US Open, where he reached the fourth round, his best showing to date in a Grand Slam, and he beat Stan Wawrinka in three sets in the process.

His run was eventually ended by Casper Ruud, the Norwegian beating him in four sets en route to the final.

Moutet chose not to play any warm-up tournaments prior to the Australian Open, which means that his last competitive match was his third round defeat in the Paris Masters at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Wu Makes His Melbourne Debut

Wu is making his debut in Melbourne after being given a wildcard.

That was due largely to his efforts last year, where he enjoyed a golden few weeks on the Challenger tour in the USA, winning three successive trophies in Rome, Georgia and Indianapolis.

He then qualified for the US Open, the first time he had reached the main draw at a Grand Slam, and marked the occasion by beating the 31st seed, Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia.

Wu then beat Nuno Borges of Portugal in five sets to become the first Chinese male player to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in 76 years, before then losing to the then world number one Daniil Medvedev.

His season began In Adelaide, where he beat Ugo Humbert of France in the qualifying competition, but then was beaten by Alexei Popyrin of Australia, losing in three sets.

He did not play in the second Adelaide tournament.

Moutet v Wu Prediction and Tip

Whilst Moutet might be rusty, not having played a competitive match since the end of October, he has experience of playing in Melbourne, whilst it will be a new experience for the Chinese man.

The Frenchman will be hoping to make that count to his advantage.
