Tomas-Martin Etcheverry v Gregoire Barrere Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, on clay in  a Challenger event in the Czech Republic two years ago, Etcheverry winning in three sets.

Etcheverry Beaten in the First Round Last Year

Last year Etcheverry reached his highest ranking yet, propelled by his form on the Challenger tour where he reached five finals, although he only won the first in Chile.

The fact that all of them were on clay gives some indication where the strength of his game lies. He made his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne last year after coming through qualifying, but was beaten in the first round by Pablo Carreno Busta.

The Argentine would go on to make his maiden appearances at both the French Open and Wimbledon as well, again falling at the first round stage.

Like his opponent, he began his season in Adelaide, where Etcheverry beat Luke Saville of Australia and Robin Haase of the Netherlands in qualifying.

However, another Australian, Jason Kubler, then knocked him out in the first round.

Barrere Beat Isner in Auckland

Barrere has never been beyond the second round of a Grand Slam, something he achieved in Melbourne in 2020.

The previous year he had achieved his highest world ranking, but consistency has been one of his major issues and struggles with form meant he ended 2021 well outside the top 100.

However, in 2022 he enjoyed something of a renaissance on the Challenger tour, and reached five finals, winning the last two, both on home soil on hard courts, in Orleans and Brest.

As a result, he was able to end the season close to his previous best ranking.

His year began with him failing to qualify for Adelaide.

He enjoyed better fortune in Auckland, where he beat Federico Coria of Argentina in the second round of qualifying, before enjoying a big win over John Isner in the first round.

Barrere’s run was ended by compatriot Constant Lestienne in three sets.

Etcheverry v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Although Etcheverry is the higher ranked of the pair, the surface in Melbourne is far more to the liking of Barrere, and he will be expected to make the second round.
