Maria Sakkari v Yue Yuan Head to Head

Sakkari and Yuan will be facing off for the first time in any kind of competitive tennis.

Sakkari Stumbles to Trevisan at United Cup

After having made a good start to her season at the United Cup, it was Sakkari’s defeat to Italy’s Martina Trevisan that made the difference between Greece advancing to the final and getting knocked out.

Now this might sound a tad harsh in a team event but the fact is Sakkari was coming into the encounter having won three singles matches in a row. All of them in straight sets.

And she was playing an opponent whose record on hardcourt surfaces is not one to rejoice. In fact Trevisan was a whopping 13/2 underdog entering the match and for Sakkari to lose that one would have deeply hurt.

What Sakkari will need to do is to push all of that behind her as she prepares for a Grand Slam in which she has never been to a quarterfinal. A solid showing here should get her back into the reckoning.

Yuan Coming off Best Grand Slam Showing

Last year, Yuan had made it to the third round of the US Open. In doing so, she had won her first match at a Grand Slam when she knocked wildcard entrant Jaimee Fourlis out and followed it up by doubling her Grand Slam match win count when she shocked Irina Begu in the second round.

Yuan surprised a few more people in the third round by taking a set off Jessica Pegula but that’s where her sorcery ended.

Since then though, Yuan hasn’t done a lot on the WTA circuit and as a result of that, has fallen off the rankings a bit.

Three ITF finals appearances late last year brought her to her career-best ranking of 74th but qualifying defeats in both, Hobart and Adelaide this season have not boded too well for her ranking.

And now that she takes on Sakkari in her opener here, it could take a while for that ranking to improve.

Sakkari v Yuan Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is a favourite here by some distance but we won’t want to discount Yuan’s fighting qualities. She might even take a set off Sakkari.
