De Minaur High on Confidence After Nadal Win
Alex de Minaur may have played just two matches in 2023, but he has already made an impact by defeating Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career.
De Minaur, who was part of the Australian team at the United Cup, had lost his singles match against Great Britain to Cameron Norrie, but he put on a brilliant show in his next singles match against Nadal.
Working hard throughout the match, the 23-year-old came back from a set down to stun the World no. 2, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Australia couldn’t go past the Group phase of the United Cup but that win for De Minaur would have surely boosted his confidence.
Ranked no. 24th in the world, he is one of the home favourites, who will be making his sixth appearance in the Melbourne major. He delivered his best result in the tournament last year, when he made it to the Round of 16 for the first time, before falling to Nadal in straight sets.
De Minaur is coming off a decent 2022, when he picked his sixth career title by triumphing in Atlanta. He also had four semifinal finishes during a 47-25 season.

Hsiou Hsu Comes Through Qualifiers
Last year in October, Yu Hsiou Hsu had captured his first Challenger title in Sydney. Three months on, he has achieved another major feat by qualifying for his maiden Grand Slam.
The world no. 208 did not drop a set during the qualifying rounds. In his first match, he defeated France’s Evan Furness 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and then knocked out Sweden’s Elias Ymer 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).
In the final qualifying round, the 23-year-old defeated another Frenchman, Alexandre Müller, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to move into the main draw.
Hsu has played just one Davis Cup match before at the tour level and he succeeded in winning that.
He has won six titles at the ITF World Tennis Tour, winning three of them last year. The 23-year-old right-hander, featured in the Nonthaburi Challenger in Thailand before the qualifying rounds, winning two matches in the tournament before falling in the quarterfinals.
He may not go past the first round in Melbourne, but will be looking forward to the opportunity to gain some valuable experience at the top level.
