Daniel Evans v Facundo Bagnis Head to Head
Evans won their only meeting in the first round of the Australian Open in 2017.

Evans Off to a Slow Start
Daniel Evans doesn’t have a great record in the majors. The 32-year-old Briton has reached the Round of 16 only on two occasions. One of those was at the Australian Open in 2017 and the other at the U.S. Open in 2021.
This will be Evans’ seventh appearance in the Melbourne major but he faces a tough draw and reaching the last eight will be a huge ask as he faces a potential third round against fifth seed Andrey Rublev.
Last year, Evans made it to the third round after he received a walkover in the round of 64, but was prevented from progressing further by Felix Auger-Aliassime.
This year, Evans comes in with a 1-3 record. His only win came against A clay specialist Albert Ramos-Vinolas at the United Cup. He lost his other singles matches in the mixed-gender tournament to Jason Kubler of Australia and Frances Tiafoe of the USA.
Evans next participated in Adelaide International-2 but went down in the first round to Mackenzie McDonald. So the preparations for the first major haven’t gone the way he would have liked, but having played four matches in the run-up to the tournament, he comes in having spent some valuable time on court.
A one-time champion on the tour, Evans didn’t reach a single tour-level final in 2022, but he did make it to the semifinals in Montreal and won a Challenger title on grass.

Can Bagnis Deliver on Hard Courts?
Facing Evans will be World no. 90 Facundo Bagnis, who has a 6-19 career record on hard courts at the tour level.
Bagnis, who doesn’t have a lot of Grand Slam experience, will be playing at the Australian Open for the third time. In both the previous occasions, he was beaten in the opening round.
While in 2017, it was Evans who handed him a three sets drubbing, he put up a valiant effort in his first round match last year, before going down to Cristian Garin in five.
Can Bagnis cross the first round hurdle this year? It’s a huge ask for him. He hasn’t had much of match practice before the tournament, having played just two qualifying rounds in Auckland, winning the first one against Tseng Chun-hsin, but losing to Jiri Lehecka in the next.
Also, in 2022, he played very little on hard courts, finishing with a 9-9 record on the surface from all levels and went 3-7 on hard courts at the tour-level.
The Argentine is most comfortable playing on clay and may find the going tough once again on a surface that never suited his style.
Evans v Bagnis Prediction and Tip
Given the surface, Evans definitely is the favourite in this contest. But it will be interesting to see if Bagnis can test the Briton and take the match as deep as possible.
