Roberto Bautista Agut v Joao Sousa Head to Head

They are 3-3 on the tour, but if one were to include the lower level tournaments, Bautista Agut leads 7-3.

Bautista Agut In Good Form

While we are writing the preview, Roberto Bautista Agut was battling against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the semifinal of Adelaide International-2. While the Aussie put up a stern resistance, Bautista Agut eventually came through in three sets to reach his 22nd career final.

He will now be chasing a 12th tour-level title when he faces Kwon Soon-woo in the final of the tournament. Bautista Agut, who had beaten Robin Haase and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first two rounds, will be happy with his form ahead of the Australian Open.

The Spaniard, who will be playing in the tournament for the 12th time, was a quarterfinalist in 2019. Last year, he reached the third round of the tournament before falling to Taylor Fritz in a five-set contest.

With the sort of form he is in at the moment he will be hoping to go deeper this year, but faces a potential third round against the 13th seed Matteo Berrettini and a potential fourth round against the second seed Casper Ruud.

Ranked no. 26th, Bautista Agut is 4-1 so far in 2022. He also played in Adelaide-1, winning the first round contest and falling in the second to Sebastian Korda.

Last year the Spaniard finished with a 39-20 record, which saw him claim two titles in Doha and Kitzbuhel and finish runner-up in Mallorca.

He is in top form at the moment. Can he keep it going in the first major of the season?

Sousa Off to a Tough Start

Joao Sousa will be making his 10th appearance in the main draw of the Australian Open.

The Portuguese player, ranked no. 82 in the world, has reached the third round thrice in the tournament but has never gone beyond that stage.

He has not had an ideal preparation for this year’s tournament. Playing in the qualifying rounds in Auckland, he defeated a much lower ranked Reynolds Finn in the first qualifier, but fell to Christopher Eubanks in the second qualifying round.

He still made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, but was sent packing by Richard Gasquet in straight sets.

Sousa is coming off a 16-20 season in 2022. While he struggled for most parts of the season on the tour, he won the title in Pune to claim his fourth career title and a first since 2018. He also reached another final in Geneva, only to finish runner-up to Casper Ruud.

He has not started the 2023 season well, can he turn things around in Melbourne?

Bautista Agut v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Although they have shared the spoils in their previous six meetings on the tour, Bautista Agut’s form give him the edge in this contest. He has also been the more consistent of the two since their last meeting in Gstaad in 2019, which was won by Sousa. So expect this contest to got the Spaniard’s way.
