Thiago Monteiro v Constant Lestienne Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the second round of a Challenger event in Germany in 2019, Monteiro winning in straight sets.

Monteiro Has Never Been Beyond the Melbourne Second Round

Monteiro, the Brazilian world number one, made his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne, six years ago. However, he has never been beyond the second round here.

Primarily a clay court player, he has won 13 Challenger tour titles on the surface, two of them in 2022, in Austria and Italy. He reached a career high ranking last August, but has dropped back slightly since then.

Monteiro’s season began playing for his country in the United Cup, but he lost both his matches, beaten by Casper Ruud and Matteo Berrettini, both times in straight sets.

He came through qualifying to make the main draw in Auckland, but was beaten in the first round by Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic, again losing in straight sets.

Auckland Semi-Finalist Lestienne

Lestienne is something of a late bloomer, having been suspended earlier in his career for betting on tennis matches.

However, he won his first Challenger tour event in 2021 for more than three years, and he reached five more finals in 2022, winning three of them, all of them on hard courts, with his most recent triumph coming in Vancouver in August, when he beat compatriot Arthur Rinderknech in the final.

The following month he reached his first quarter-final on the senior tour in San Diego, breaking into the top 70 for the first time in his career.

He then went one stage the next month in Tel Aviv, where he beat the fourth seed Maxime Cressy in the last eight, his first victory over a top 50 opponent.

The Frenchman was beaten by Novak Djokovic in straight sets in Adelaide, but reached the semi-finals in Auckland before withdrawing from his match with compatriot Richard Gasquet after feeling a slight injury.

Monteiro v Lestienne Prediction and Tip

Whilst neither man has any record to speak of in Grand Slams, Lestienne showed that he is good form in Auckland, and, against an opponent who is happier on clay, he should be confident he can make the second round.
