Wolf Looking to Build on 2022 Progress

Wolf missed much of the 2021 season after undergoing a hernia operation, which meant that he began the following year ranked outside the top 200 in the world.

However, a strong start to the new campaign, which saw him qualify for both Indian Wells and Miami, saw his ranking improve rapidly, and he reached the quarter-finals in Washington, beating both Denis Shapovalov and Holger Rune along the way.

His giant-killing continued at the US Open, where he beat 13th seed Roberto Batuista-Agut, before going on to make the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Then in Florence, he reached his first ever final, eventually losing to Felix Augur-Aliassime in straight sets.

His 2023 campaign began in Auckland, where he reached the second round, only to lose to compatriot Marcos Giron in straight sets.

Thompson’s Poor Melbourne Record

Thompson has a poor record in his home Grand Slam, which he first played back in 2014, and he has never been beyond the second round in Melbourne.

His best performance at any Grand Slam was in New York in 2020, when he got to the fourth round.

Back in 2019, he reached the final on the grass of Rosmalen, but lost to the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. 2022 was not his best year on tour, and he finished the season with a 11-17 win ratio.

However, Thompson was part of the Australian team that got to the Davis Cup final in Malaga, before losing eventually to Canada.

His year began with an opening round defeat to Quentin Halys in Adelaide, and he failed to qualify for the following week’s event.

Wolf v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Given Thompson has such a poor record in Melbourne, he will not go into this match with a great deal of confidence, and Wolf will begin favourite to progress to the second round.
