The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 20 year old American, and his Chinese opponent, who is six years older.

Shelton’s Meteoric Rise

Shelton has had a meteoric rise in the past two years.

At the start of 2021, he was the fifth ranked player on the University of Florida team and did not even have a world ranking. But having won the NCAA title last year, and been named the ITA Player of the Year, he decided to quit college and concentrate on his professional career, making the transition to the ATP tour almost seamlessly.

In the space of five months he reached six Challenger finals and won four of them, including two in November alone – in Knoxville and Champagne.

Earlier he made his ATP debut in Atlanta as a wildcard, and, having also been given a wildcard into the Cincinnati Masters, he earned the biggest win of his fledgling career by beating Casper Ruud in straight sets.

Another wildcard saw him make his Grand Slam debut at the US Open, but he was beaten in the first round.

This season so far, he failed to qualify for Adelaide, but beat Sebastian Baez of Argentina in straight sets in Auckland before losing to Quentin Halys of France.

This will be his first time in the Australian Open but has no need of a wildcard this time – he has earned his place by right.

Zhang First Chinese Man to Break into Top 100

In 2021, Zhang became the first Chinese man in the Open era to reach the main draw at Wimbledon, and, last season, he added some other notable achievements to his CV.

He reached four Challenger finals, although he was only to win one of them, on clay in Italy.

Four months later he was runner-up in a doubles event in the USA as well.

Zhang reached the main draw of his second Grand Slam at the US Open, but was beaten in the first round.

He ended the season by qualifying in Naples, and went on to reach the quarter-finals, beating the fifth seed Sebastian Baez, enabling him to become the first man from his country to break into the top 100.

This is his first time to play the Australian Open, with his one previous match this year being a defeat in qualifying for Adelaide, beaten in straight sets by Alexei Popyrin of Australia.

Shelton v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Playing in Melbourne will be a new experience for both men, and neither has won a Grand Slam singles match before.

Some, though, are predicting that Shelton could go right to the top, and this is an early chance for him to prove his credentials.
