Alexei Popyrin v Chun Hsin Tseng Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was in the first round of the US Open last year, Popyrin winning in straight sets.

Popyrin Gets a Melbourne Wildcard

This will be Popyrin’s sixth appearance in his home Grand Slam, and he has twice made the third round – in 2019 and again in 2020.

The following year he won his first ATP title in Singapore, and big things were expected of him, only for him to suffer a loss of form and his ranking dropped as a result.

A win on the Challenger tour last May saw him restored to the top 100 again, only for him to drop out of it again.

2023, though, has started much brighter for the Australian.

Having come through qualifying in Adelaide, he produced a major early season shock by beating the world number six Felix Augur-Aliassime in straight sets. He would go on to beat Marcos Giron of the USA, before losing in the quarter-finals to Yoshihito Nishioka in three sets.

He was unable to repeat his heroics in Adelaide second time round, losing a three set opening round battle with compatriot Thanas Kokkinakis.

Popyrin is a recipient of a wildcard in Melbourne.

Tseng Looking for First Grand Slam Win

Tseng was a former junior world number one, and won the boys’ singles at both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2018.

He made his breakthrough on the main tour when he reached two Challenger finals in Portugal in December, 2021, winning the second of them.

And he carried that form into 2022, reaching three more Challenger finals and adding titles in India and Spain to his collection.

He made his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne last year as a wildcard, but lost in the first round.  Later he would make the first round of all the other Grand Slams but failed to progress beyond that stage.

His form was good enough for him to earn a place in the NextGen Finals in Milan for the best young players in the world, but he lost all three of his round robin matches.

The Taiwanese has lost both his matches so far in 2023 – beaten in the first round in Pune, and in qualifying for Auckland.

Popyrin v Tseng Prediction and Tip

Popyrin won their previous Grand Slam match in convincing fashion, and playing in conditions he knows well and with the home crowd behind him, is a heavy favourite to do so again.
