Martina Trevisan v Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Head to Head

Trevisan has won their only meeting so far; she sailed into the semis in Bol in 2019 after beating her opponent 6-4, 6-1.

Trevisan Coming off a Solid Start

The newly-ranked World No. 22 looks all ready to stake her claim in Melbourne this week.

Although her only build-up tournament was the United Cup, she was a finalist there. She played five matches, winning two of them.

The most impressive of the two was her three-set slogfest against Maria Sakkari, winning 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-5  – much to the frustration of the Greek. Even in defeat, Trevisan ended up gaining some valuable experience by facing Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, and Beatriz Haddad Maia. In some ways, she has had a good practice run ahead of the Slam.

The 29-year-old has never made it past round two in the Aus Open, but her doubles quarterfinal run in 2019 (and a semifinal showing in last year’s French Open) gives her something to work with.

Schmiedlova Breezes through the Qualifiers

Former #26 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova paved her way through the prelims without losing a set. She enjoyed a comfortable and confident start as she beat Irina Khromacheva, Jessika Pinochet, and Elizabeth Mandlik.

With this, she also turned around her disappointing start to the new season. The 28-year-old last played in ITF Canberra – and lost in the first round to Lesia Tsurenko 6-7(4), 2-6.

The last few seasons have been bleak for the current #100 as she struggled to perform on the WTA Tour. She has been largely consistent in low-tier events, having won more than 30 matches in 2020 and 2021.

Schmiedlova was a finalist in ITF Trnava last October where she took her only silverware of the season.

Trevisan v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

Trevisan should do well to win this one, given her superior pedigree and recent form. That said, the Slovak may be rusty but her opponent has seen her fair share of shock defeats. An upset is on the cards; with Anna at 7/4, she may be a bet worth making.
