Hubert Hurkacz v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players of which one came in the qualifiers of the 2018 US Open and the other at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. Hurkacz has won both.

Hurkacz Hoping to Better Australian Open Record

For a player who has made it to two hardcourt Masters 1000 finals, Hurkacz’s record at the hardcourt Grand Slam competitions isn’t the brightest.

At the Australian Open, he has featured in five editions and made it to the second round just twice, losing both times at that stage. Things are only marginally better at the US Open where Hurkacz has entered round two on four of five occasions but never beyond that again.

The Polish number one also comes into this year’s Australian Open on the back of some mixed results in the season-opener, United Cup.

He defeated Alexander Bublik and Stan Wawrinka in the group stages to help Poland qualify for the Host City Finals. Following that, however, Hurkacz lost both his singles matches to Matteo Berrettini and Taylor Fritz.

If he wants to go deeper into the competition, Hurkacz will need to get a lot of his act together on hard court surfaces but up against a clay-court specialist, he should not have too many problems in making the second round for the third time here.

Martinez Finishes as a Pune Quarterfinalist

On the one hand, Martinez would be quite chuffed to have started the season on a positive note in Pune. The Spaniard made it past Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sebastian Baez to enter the quarterfinals there.

On the other, Martinez would know that while Ramanathan isn’t quite a player of note, Baez is also a clay-court specialist like the Spaniard himself.

The first time Martinez faced a player in Pune who knows his way around hardcourt, Martinez fell in straight sets to Aslan Karatsev. To underline that, Martinez’s performance in hardcourt tournaments last season saw him win successive matches only twice in the entire year.

Up against Hurkacz, who hasn’t done too well at this tournament, Martinez might have a slight chance of pushing him but that’s all there could be to it here.

Hurkacz v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is 1/20 to win this and unless things go drastically wrong for him, we expect him to come through easily here. A straight-set win beckons the Pole.
