Yoshihito Nishioka v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

Nishioka and Ymer have not clashed at any level before this.

Nishioka Retired in Adelaide

It will be fascinating to see whether Yoshihito Nishioka has recovered from the leg injury that forced him to retire in his semifinal match against Sebastian Korda at the Adelaide International.

Nishioka started the year firing on all cylinders. He upset Holger Rune in the first round to register his first Top 10 win of the season. And the good performances did not stop there as Nishioka scored wins over Mackenzie McDonald and a resurgent Alexei Popyrin to reach the last four.

However, an apparent leg injury seemed to be an issue for Nishioka who lost the first set against Korda in the semifinals. Despite taking a medical timeout he could not carry on for the remainder of the second set.

With that said, it could have been a precaution as Nishioka did not want to risk playing with pain and doing further damage to his injury with just a week to the Australian Open.

Ymer Finds His Range in Adelaide 2

Mikael Ymer has played in two warmup tournaments – the Adelaide doubleheader. First, he lost in the opening round of Adelaide 1 to Roman Saifullin in straight sets.

But he redeemed himself in Adelaide 2, where he passed the qualifying rounds notching wins over Nikoloz Basilashvili and Jordan Thompson to reach the main draw.

And the Swede gave a good account of himself by outlasting the tenacious Emil Ruusuvuori in a marathon opening round and Mackenzie McDonald thereafter.

But Ymer fell in the quarterfinals to the South Korean lucky loser Soonwoo Kwon, who at the time of writing went on to reach the final. Ymer will be happy with his level, but Nishioka won’t be a pushover in the first round.

Nishioka v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Being unseeded in a Grand Slam, you always pray to avoid landing a Top 10 seed in the first round. But in Ymer’s case, he knows this matchup is as tough as facing any of those high-caliber opponents. Nishioka has the better weight of shot, ground stroke accuracy, and court craft. Fitness permitting, Nishioka should outlast the Swede.
