Cameron Norrie v Luca Van Assche Head to Head

Norrie and Van Assche haven’t faced off in a competitive match before this.

Norrie 6-1 in 2023 after Losing Auckland Final

Norrie would probably enter the Australian Open this season with somewhat of a bitter-sweet feel. He started off with a solid showing in the United Cup where he not just won all his three matches but also defeated opponents of note.

The British number one crushed Alex de Minaur in his opener before sending both Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz packing in hard-fought three-setters. Those are the kind of results that can do a player’s confidence a world of good.

He took that form into the Auckland Open and looked to be on a roll there.

It started out with an opening bye before he squeaked past Jiri Lehecka and Marcos Giron to make the it to the semifinal. And a 6-3, 6-4 rout of Jenson Brooksby brought him another ATP final.

Going in as a huge favourite to win it, Norrie stumbled at the final hurdle to the French veteran Richard Gasquet which was bit of a surprise result but the Brit will still take a lot of confidence from his previous six wins in 2023.

Van Assche Gets a Wildcard

He is all of 18 years of age but Van Assche is already making heads turn with his tennis. While he is yet to register major wins at any ATP levels, his performances have earned him a wildcard here.

What these performances at the lower level of tennis have also done is helped Van Assche climb up the rankings ladder drastically.

Only 12 months ago, Van Assche had entered the new season ranked outside the top 500. Today he has ascended to 142nd in the world despite having started the 2023 season without a win. A Futures win and another victory on the Challenger circuit last season helped his cause.

He featured in the Canberra Challenger to kick-start 2023 but lost his opener before crashing out of the Auckland Open qualifiers.

Against an in-form Norrie, Van Assche might find the going difficult but he could spring a surprise in one of the sets.

Norrie v Van Assche Prediction and Tip

Norrie has already played seven matches this season which could mean he enters this tournament with some exhaustion under his belt. As a result he might face a challenge from his teenaged opponent but should still come through easily.
