Elise Mertens v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

Muguruza leads 2-0, last beating Mertens in the 2021 WTA Dubai semifinal in straight sets.

Muguruza Struggling to Perform

Former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza has fallen on hard times as she finds herself on a desperate hunt for victories.

She is 0-2 in 2023, losing to Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu in Adelaide events. This loss of form began in 2022 when she ended the season at 12-17 – failing to bag more than 15 wins for the first time since 2011.

The losses have come against athletes of all sorts, thus giving Mertens a strong precedent to follow. That said, Muguruza’s pedigree is certainly far superior – spanning across 17 WTA finals, including the Australian Open in 2020.

Garbine, owing to this dearth of results, has fallen down to #58 – with her last tour win coming in September.

Mertens in a Similar Boat

Elise Mertens has featured in just one tournament this season – Hobart International, where she fell to Maryna Zanevska 4-6, 4-6. Before that, she lost to the #323-ranked Greek Gregana Topalova in the United Cup.

The Belgian hasn’t been in as bad a form as Muguurza, but she hasn’t seen better days that often either. Her 2022 spell ended at 29-23 with a singles title from the Jasmin Open.

In the doubles department, Mertens reached an impressive 7 wins – including WTA Finals, Miami Open, and Wimbledon.

Looking at her form, it has been varying wildly with no definite consistency. The World No. 27 is equipped to beat Muguruza- provided she starts strong.

Mertens v Muguruza Prediction and Tip

Mertens may not be the worst bet to make here, given that she is at 1/1. Going by her recent results, Muguruza is likely to face a tough time here.
