Sebastian Korda played only one event leading up to the Australian Open but he played it well reaching the final and losing to Novak Djokovic.
Despite playing a hampered Novak Djokovic, Sebastian Korda lacked the final push to finish off the match even though he could have done it. It’s a pity for him but he remained positive after the match focusing on just improving upon that moving forward.
It’s the right mindset and he’s going to be a very dangerous player because his playstyle fits so well on thee courts. Precise and strong from the service line, with flat groundstrokes, it’s just perfect. It will remain a question of just how well he’ll play though.
He can be quite streaky and while it worked in Adelaide I would not be shocked if he stumbled in the first one. The opponent is one that can beat him in the right circumstances.

3-1 Start for Garin
Cristian Garin opted for the challenger Tour in preparation for the Australian Open and it was a smart choice. He was able to play four matches and win three of them which is probably more than he would have won if he played on the ATP Tour.
It’s a slow return to form for Garin who has dealt with a shoulder injury last year that almost saw him end his career. It’s been better lately and he’s continued his career but he’s far from his best level. Even at his best, he wasn’t that good of a player on hard courts.
He can win this matchup but he would need a lot of things going wrong. His level would need to be a fair amount higher than in Noumea and even then he would need his opponent to produce a lacklustre effort.
It’s unlikely that either of those things will happen but he’s 3-3 all-time at the Australian reaching the 3rd round last year.
Korda v Garin Prediction and Tip
Sebastian Korda is favoured to win this one because he’s far better equipped to do so. A lot will depend on whether the good or bad version of him shows up. We’ll trust him and see what happens.
