Tough Quarter for Dutchman

If Botic van de Zandschulp is looking to emulate his quarterfinal run at the US Open a few seasons, he will probably have to run the gauntlet during the fortnight.

The Dutchman’s draw is littered with heavy hitters and big-match players. He will open up against Ilya Ivashka with the possibility of facing countryman Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.

Van de Zandschulp’s third-round opponent will most likely be Stefanos Tsitsipas, but before he can look ahead he should be looking to get off to a winning start.

The 27-year-old has started the season decently, reaching the semifinals at the ATP 250 event in Pune, although he was upstaged by Benjamin Bonzi despite being the tournament’s second seed.

Ivashka Set for his first Outing of 2023

Ilya Ivashka will play for the first time in 2023. It is quite strange that Ivashka did not partake in any tuneup events in the build-up to the Australian Open.

It has not been disclosed if Ivashka was suffering from any injuries, but given his record, in the past 12 months, it wouldn’t be a surprise.

Ivashka missed last year’s Australian Open due to injury, and in fact, delayed his comeback until February. It was a chaotic year for the Belarusian who has since seen his rank cascade considerably in the last six months.

Currently ranked 70th in the world, he is far off from his career-best ranking of No. 40, largely due to his inability to defend his Winston-Salem title last August.

Van de Zandschulp v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

While Ivashka possesses the tools and ammunition of excelling on hard courts, he hasn’t played any warm-up matches since the turn of the year. We expect the Dutchman to advance into the second round unscathed.
