The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 29 year old Japanese, and the American, who is three years younger.

Japanese Number Two Daniel

Last year Daniel made it through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career in Melbourne, beating Andy Murray along the way, before losing to the 13th seed Jannik Sinner.

In his four previous visits to the Australian Open, the Japanese number two behind Yoshihito Nishioka had only previous got beyond the first round once.

His biggest success on the ATP tour came back in 2018 when he won the Istanbul Open on clay, although he has enjoyed success on the Challenger tour more recently than that.

The 29 year old has been struggling for his best form so far this season.

He was beaten in the second round of qualifying for Adelaide by Soon-woo Kwon of South Korea, and then was beaten in the first stage of the Auckland qualifying competition by Ajeet Rai of New Zealand, ranked 490 in the world.

Third Time in Melbourne Main Draw for Escobedo

This is the third time that Escobedo has appeared in the main draw at the Australian Open.

He came through qualifying to make the second round in 2017, and then went out at the first round stage last year.

This time he has earned the right to play Daniel, with three consecutive straight set victories, beating Luca Nardi of Italy, Rio Noguchi of Japan, and Pavel Kotov of the Czech Republic, all of whom are higher ranked than him.

Although born in California and eligible to play internationally for the US, last year he opted to represent Mexico instead.

A year ago he enjoyed success on the Challenger tour on Australian soil, winning a tournament in Bendigo.

Daniel v Escobedo Prediction and Tip

Although Daniel has yet to find any form in 2023, he is playing a qualifier ranked 215 places below him in the world, and he should have enough know-how to make the difference in class tell.
