The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 21 year old Australian, and the German, who is a decade older.

Australian Wildcard Hijikata
A former twice Australian Male Junior Athlete of the Year, Hijikata, after a successful college career in America, turned professional in 2021, and he made his senior ATP tour debut in the Melbourne Summer Set last year, after qualifying.
He was beaten in the first round by the American Maxime Cressy who went on to reach the final
He has spent the majority of his brief career so far on the ITF circuit, but he reached and won his first Challenger tour on home soil in Playford, Australia.
A few months prior to that he qualified for the Los Cabos Open, and won his first, and, to date, only senior match, when local wildcard Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, was forced to retire injured.
He has previously received wildcards into qualifying for the Australian Open, but this will be his first appearance in the main draw.

Hanfmann’s Third Consecutive Main Draw Appearance in Melbourne
Despite suffering from impaired hearing from birth, Hanfmann has enjoyed a decent career, and reached the final in Kitzbuhel in 2020, only to lose to the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic.
This will be the third successive time that he has qualified for the Australian Open, and his achievement in reaching the second round last year was his best performance to date in a Grand Slam.
He had a stroke of good fortune in his first qualifying match when his opponent, Maximillian Marterer, was forced to retire with an injury.
The German, though, was forced to come from a set down to defeat Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina in his next match, before easing past another German Ppeter Gojowczyk to earn his place against Daniel.
He is better known as a clay court player, and was a beaten finalist on the Challenger tour on an event on that surface in Rio in October.
Hijikata v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip
Hijikata has the benefit of playing in home conditions and can count on vociferous local support, but Hanfmann is an experienced operator, and he should be able to shrug that off and concentrate on his own game. He will start the favourite to make the second round again..
