Pune Winner Griekspoor

In 2021 Griekspoor won eight titles on the Challenger tour and set a new record by becoming the first man in history to win five in succession.

He added another title to his collection in 2022, but, prior to this year, he had yet to enjoy the same success on the senior tour.

However, he began 2023 with a bang by winning the first senior title of his career in Pune.

He got to the final by beating Jaume Munar and Marco Cecchinato in the earlier rounds, before enjoying a walkover against the top seed, Marin Cilic, in the quarter finals.

Aslan Karatsev was despatched in straight sets in the semi-final, before he battled past Benjamin Bonzi of France in three sets to lift the trophy.

This is his third time in the Melbourne main draw. He reached the second round last year, emulating his best result to date in a Grand Slam.

Lucky Loser Kotov

This is the third time that Kotov will appear in the main draw of a Grand Slam, having reached the first round of the French and US Opens last year.

However, he owes his presence there this time round to a slice of good fortune. He was beaten in the final qualifying round by the Mexican American Ernesto Escobedo in straight sets, but earned a reprieve as a Lucky Loser.

Primarily known for his exploits on the Challenger tour, he won two tournaments last year, in Italy and neighbouring San Marino.

Probably the highlight of his season was qualifying for the Astana Open, again via the Lucky Loser route, and then beating Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina of Spain in the first round for the biggest win of his career.

He began the new season playing in a Challenger tournament in Canberra, but was beaten by the Australian Dane Sweeny in the first round.

Griekspoor v Kotov Prediction and Tip

Although Kotov has won both their previous matches, they were on clay, which is a surface that does not suit Griekspoor’s game, The Dutchman will be full of confidence having won his maiden senior ATP title in India, and will be hoping for a good run in Melbourne.
