Schwartzman Fitness a Question-Mark after Auckland

Opting to not participate in the United Cup, Schwartzman played his first tournament of the season at the Auckland Open. And he did not last too long there.

Schwartzman was up against Jenson Brooksby in his opener there and while he wasn’t quite the favourite going into that match, a 6-1 loss in the opening set was a bit of a surprise.

What would have been more bothersome than that, however, was Schwartzman retired from that match soon after. A leg injury forced that eventuality on to Schwartzman and he now enters this competition under that fitness cloud.

The Argentine has been to the fourth round at Australian Open in the past, with his previous edition yielding just a second round defeat. Can he shrug off his injury concerns and poor form to get past his qualifying opponent?

Krutykh Makes Through To His Maiden Grand Slam

Krutykh was outside the top 600 on the ATP charts just before the pandemic hit. He improved to get into the top 400 by the end of 2021 but it was in 2022 that his best season came.

He scalped his maiden and then a second Challenger title, both of which came on clay.

In fact in the whole of the season, Krutykh played in only 11 matches in outdoor and indoor hardcourt competitions while 65 of his matches came on clay. This is another indicator of Krutykh’s preferences.

Which is also why defeating Stefan Kozlov, Gianluca Mager and Denis Kudla in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw on hardcourt surfaces will come as a surprise to those who have been following his progress.

Can he now upset Schwartman here?

Schwartzman v Krutykh Prediction and Tip

Schwartzman’s fitness issues aside, he should come through this one against another player who prefers clay over hardcourt surfaces.
