John Isner v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

It’s a rivalry that goes back to 2010 and has been dominated by Isner, who leads 8-1. He suffered his only loss when he retired from his match after just 2 games in Wimbledon 2013.

The last time they faced each other was in Acapulco in 2019, when Isner won in three. It was only the second time in nine meetings when Mannarino had taken a set off Isner.

Can the King of Aces Open With a Win?

The man with most number if aces in tennis history, John Isner has a 15-13 record at the Australian Open. Among his best in the tournament were Round of 16 finishes in 2010 and 2016.

Isner, who played in the Auckland Classic in the run-up to the first Grand Slam of the year, is yet to register a win. He lost his opening round match in Auckland to Grégoire Barrère in straight sets.

The American is coming off a 23-17 season, which included a run to a 30th career final when he reached the summit clash in Houston, but couldn’t win a 17th career title after going down to Reilly Opelka.

Isner also reached two semifinals in 2022, and finished as a quarterfinalist on two occasions.

The 37-year-old, who is ranked no. 42 in the world, may not go too far in the tournament but will hold the psychological edge over Mannarino in the first round, having beaten him in all eight times in the past. If he goes past the first round, he will be up against either 22nd seed Alex de Minaur or Yu Hsiou Hsu in the next round.

Mannarino is 1-2 in 2023

Adrian Mannarino won’t be too happy with the draw as he faces his Isner in the first round. But they haven’t met since 2019 and Mannarino will be hoping to register his first win in a completed match over Isner.

The 34-year-old will hope to replicate his last year’s performance in the tournament. In 2022, Mannarino made his last 16 debut in the Melbourne major. In what was his 13th appearance at the Australian Open, the lefty defeated Hubert Hurkacz and Aslan Karatsev en route the fourth round but fell to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

The world no. 43 Mannarino won only his second career title last year, when he defeated Laslo Djere in the Winston-Salem final.

He is 1-2 in 2023. Representing France at the United Cup, he scored a convincing win over Federico Coria of Argentina but lost to Borna Gojo of Croatia in a three-set thriller.

In his next assignment in Auckland, Mannarino was handed a straight sets defeat by J.J. Wolf in the first round.

Coming into the tournament on the back of two defeats, Mannarino would look to get back to winning ways. Can the Frenchman score a shock win over the American?

Isner v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Isner’s outright dominance gives him the edge in the contest, but Mannarino is a good player and may not go down easily. The American is the favourite but he may need more than three sets to progress.
