Karolina Muchova v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head
The two ladies have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Muchova, Looking for her Former Self
The last time Karolina Muchova competed in the Melbourne Slam, she ended up reaching the semifinal.
In the 2021 edition of the Aus Open, the Czech dispatched Jelena Ostapenko, Karolina Pliskova, Elise Mertens, and Ashleigh Barty. That run set the basis for her rise into the top 20 – but the universe had other plans. Muchova’s tryst with injuries and fitness started that season, eventually forcing her to take some time off tour.
The three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist returned to the scene last March, taking things slow. The 26-year-old has since reached the last eight in Tallinn and most recently, Auckland. She lost respectively to Kaia Kanepi and Rebeka Makarova.
Muchova is now ranked World No. 133 and is competing in Melbourne under protected ranking. Fitness and momentum are still big concerns and given Tsurenko’s recent outing, she should brace for resistance.

Tsurenko Breezes through the Prelims
33-year-old Lesia Tsurenko eased into the main draw of the Australian Open without dropping a set. In the three wins over Yuki Naito, Aliona Bolsova, and Leolia Jeanjean, the Ukrainian lost just 12 games.
She has been competing in this major for over 10 years; her best results came in 2013 when she reached round three.
A former #23, Tsurenko has also fallen on hard times due to health concerns. She has stayed outside the top 100 for three seasons now, struggling to build some consistency.
Lesia ended 2022 at 25-14 with quarterfinal showings from Eastbourne, Budapest, and Portoroz being her highlights. None of the matches was played to fruition as she withdrew or retired from the bout.
It was the same story in ITF Canberra this month where Tsurenko made it to the semis but could not compete against Jodie Burrage.
Muchova v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip
Muchova is the clear favourite here; her pedigree and overall record should give her enough to move past Tsurenko into round two. While she may be tested a bit, the Czech should come out on the top.
