Collins Stretched to the Limits by Kalinskaya

She was the runner-up last Australian Open but Collins entered this year’s tournament on the back of some modest form. Which is why despite coming into her opener as a favourite, there was always that chance of Collins getting pushed by Anna Kalinskaya.

Kalinskaya has slowly, but surely, started performing well and at some point we might even see her break into the top 30 but in this first round match she came up just short.

Collins needed nearly three hours though in dispelling the Kalinskaya threat, defeating the Russian 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 to enter the second round. The difference in the two players was that one extra break of serve that Collins got in the final set as Kalinskaya served to stay in the encounter at 4-5.

And while Collins also came away with 55 winners, she made 56 unforced errors in the encounter – a stat she might want to focus on in her second round match.

Muchova Drubs Tsurenko in Opener

It took all of an hour and 16 minutes for Muchova to rout Lesia Tsurenko in her opening round match at the Australian Open as the Czech continued with her good form for the season.

The former top-20 player, Muchova dropped out of the top 100 in 2022 because of fitness issues which had also seen he miss last year’s Australian Open. While she returned in Miami to play her first tournament of 2022, a string of poor results ensured a dramatic fall in her rankings.

Muchova’s return this season first saw her make the quarterfinal at the WTA Auckland in the first week of the year but more vitally, she shrugged off her opening round opponent here in style. She won 6-2, 6-1 but what was interesting was she lost all those three games on her own serve.

That’s where she could face a problem against Collins who is a difficult player to break. From her end, Muchova will need to do a lot better on her serve if she wants to push the match to the brink.

Collins v Muchova Prediction and Tip

Collins is 1/5 to win this and we will have to go with the American for this one. We think Muchova still needs some match time before she can overcome players of the calibre and ranking of Collins.
