Stephens Off to a 0-2 Start

Sloane Stephens has not had a great start to the 2023 season losing in the opening round in Auckland and Hobart.

The World no. 36 is yet to win a set this year as she went down to Rebeka Masarova 6-3, 7-6 in Auckland and to Lauren Davis 6-2, 6-2 in Hobart.

So the preparations haven’t been ideal for the 29-year-old American, but she will be hoping to return to winning ways in the opening round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. However, she has not gone past the opening round of the tournament in the last three editions in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and has reached the second round just once in her last seven appearances in the tournament.

Her best in her 10 appearances in Melbourne was a semifinal finish in 2013.

The 2017 U.S. Open champion is coming off an 18-17 2022 season. It was the year when she ended a four-yer title drought by winning the WTA 250 in Guadalajara. She also reached the quarterfinal of the French Open, which was her first major quarterfinal since her run to the last eight in Roland Garros in 2019.

But while she did succeed in a couple of tournaments, she struggled to maintain the consistency and made plenty of first round exits. She will be hoping for some consistency in her game this season.

Potapova Struggling As Well

Anastasia Poatpova has not started 2023 on a bright note either. The 21-year-old Russian fell in the qualifying round in Adelaide-1 and made the main draw of Adelaide-2 as a lucky loser. However, she retired from  the first round match against Kateřina Siniaková, with the former leading 1-6, 0-1.

Potapova is making her fifth appearance at the Australian Open and her best in the tournament was a third round finsih in 2021.

She is coming off a successful 2022 season, which saw her win 35 matches in all and lose 24. She also lifted her first WTA Tour trophy, winning the title in Istanbul. In addition she also reached the final in Prague, but finished runner-up to Marie Bouzkova.

Ranked no. 44th in the world, Potapova fell to Camila Giorgi in the opening round of the Melbourne major last year. Twelve months on, she is a much improved player and is expected to put up a better fight this year.

Stephens v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Although she is yet to open her account this year, her experience of Grand Slam tennis still makes Stephens a favourite in this contest. Potapova will make things difficult but the American should make it to the second round.
