Vekic Has a Perfect Record in 2023

Donna Vekic is off to a flying start in 2023. Representing Croatia in the inaugural United Cup, the 26-year-old won all three of her singles matches. What’s more she didn’t drop a set in the tournament either.

Vekic defeated María Carlé of Argentina, Alize Cornet of France and Despina Papamichail of Greece in her three singles matches in the tournament.

Vekic also played in the Kooyong exhibition last week and won both her singles matches there as well. So overall Vekic is in good form ahead of her 11th appearance in the year’s first major. Her best so far has been a fourth round finish in 2021. She was knocked out in the first round last year and that was the fourth time in Melbourne, when she made an opening round exit.

Vekic, who missed a few months of action last year due to an injury, finished 2022 with a 28-20 record, including all competitions. A three-time champion on the tour, she reached her 10th career final and her only one of 2022 in San Diego in October. Although she lost the final to Iga Swiatek, she would be happy with how she finished the season.

Can the Croatian make a quick start and remain perfect in 2023?

Selekhmeteva Comes Through Qualifiers

Last year, she made her Grand Slam debut at the French Open. This year Oksana Selekhmeteva is set to play in her second major after she qualified for the Australian Open main draw.

Selekhmeteva trounced Vitalia Diatchenko 6-0, 6-2 in the first qualifying round; then eased past Ann Li 6-1, 7-5 in the second, before dispatching Sophie Chang 6-3, 6-3 in the third and qualifying for her first Australian Open.

Ranked no. 179, the 20-year-old lefty has played more matches on clay but her record on hard court isn’t bad either. She won her only title of 2022 in Montpellier, winning the clay court ITF tournament by beating Kateryna Baindl in the final. It was the second singles ITF title for her.

Selekhmeteva is 6-1 from the seven matches that she has played this year. She also featured in an ITF tournament in Canberra before the Australian Open qualifiers. There she won two qualifiers and her first round match before falling to Katie Boulter in the round of 16.

On the tour, Selekhmeteva’s best last year was a quarterfinal finish in Prague. These are early days in her professional career, can she cause an upset on Tuesday and make an impact?

Vekic v Selekhmeteva Prediction and Tip

Vekic is the better player, more experienced and also in great form. Expect her to win in straight sets.
