Clay specialist Mayar Sherif has not started off the year well and it’s not a surprise because these conditions are not what she enjoys the most.
Despite being an aggressive player who likes to attack, she doesn’t really do well in these conditions which don’t allow much wiggle room. She posted a 1-12 record on hard courts last year and that paints a very clear picture, much better than any words.
She doesn’t play much on this surface and when she does it just doesn’t work. She did win a match in the Adelaide qualifiers but the moment she faces a competent player on hard courts it becomes a tricky affair.
Winning this matchup seems unlikely but she did a better player than herself on hard courts last year en route to the second round.

Linette’s Solid 3-2 Start
Winning three matches before the Australian Open is a good start for Magda Linette as it should give her plenty of confidence heading into the event.
All three of her wins came at the United Cup where she played for Poland but then her experience in Hobart was a short one. She actually lost the last two matches she played but it was a close defeat in Hobart and it was against an arguably better player so it was not a huge surprise.
Losing in three sets also showed that she was competitive in that match but wasn’t able to get it done. She’s heavily favoured in this one so I expect her to get this done relatively easily. She’s just far more experienced in these conditions and her game is better suited for the surface.
She’s not the most immune to inconsistencies but I think she’ll be free of it.
Sherif v Linette Prediction and Tip
I expect Linette to take this one and quite easily as well. A solid option would be to back her to do in two with a riskier play being on the handicap games. I could see her winning 6-3 6-3.
