Karen Khachanov v Jason Kubler Head to Head

Khachanov and Kubler have never faced off before this in a competitive match.

Khachanov Eases Past Zapata Miralles

After back to back quarterfinals at the two Adelaide tournaments, Khachanov had entered the Australian Open on the back of reasonable form. The way he started against Bernabe Zapata Miralles in his first round match though, it looked like he was in for a long opening ride.

After all, he was on court for an hour and eight minutes for just the first set, missing three set-points and getting broken back once in the set.

A mere 57 minutes later, Khachanov was walking out of the court having carved out a straight-set win over Zapata Miralles. He scooped the match up 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-0 to reach round two.

Khachanov will now hope he can make it two in two in Melbourne and in doing so reach the third round at this tournament for the fifth successive time in his career.

Standing in his path is the talented local, Kubler who was ranked as low as 305th in the world two seasons ago.

Kubler Weaves Past Baez

Sebastian Baez is a solid player, ranked 44th in the world at the moment with a career-best ranking of 31. But he is also bit of a clay-court specialist having won 11 of his 12 men’s titles – including 11 at lower levels – on clay.

Which is why, it wasn’t that much of a surprise to see Kubler start off a favourite in their opening round encounter despite coming into the tournament ranked 84th in the world.

And Kubler played like a favourite too, clinching his first ever second round berth at the Australian Open in straight sets.

Kubler won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes, in display so clinical that it could put some fear in his second round opponent’s mind. The Aussie got himself three break-points – one in each of the three sets – and broke each time.

On the other hand, he saved all the three he faced to ensure there was no late dramas in the encounter.

If he turns up in the way he did in the first round, Kubler could make life very difficult for Khachanov.

Khachanov v Kubler Prediction and Tip

Khachanov is 2/5 to win this and while we back him to make it through, it is a touch and go thing. Kubler can be expected to win a set here.
