Qinwen Zheng v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the Melbourne Summer Set event last year, Zheng winning in three sets.

Zheng Thrashes Hungarian

The number two Chinese player Zheng is already proving she is a capable Grand Slam player by reaching the fourth round of the French Open last year, and reaching the third round stage at both Wimbledon and New York.

And she breezed into the second round of Melbourne for a second successive year by thrashing the Hungarian Dalma Galfi, the world number 88, for the loss of just two games.

The rot for the Hungarian set in early. She was broken three successive times in the first set, and could only win four points on the Zheng serve. It took just 25 minutes to complete the set.

Zheng then raced into a five love lead in the second set, before Galfi at last showed some resistance. She held serve and got one of the breaks back.

But any hopes of an unlikely comeback were quickly quashed as she was broken again, enabling Zheng to conclude proceedings in under an hour.

Pera Given Tough Test by Wildcard

By contrast, Pera had to dig deeper than she might have liked to reach the second round in Melbourne for the fourth time in her career.

Pitted against Japanese wildcard, Moyuka Uchijama, the world number 116, any thoughts that this would be just another day in the office for the American were swiftly dispelled, as she was broken in the opening game of the match.

Another break enabled Uchijama to claim the first set with comparative ease.

The second set began with the pair exchanging breaks, and then a potentially pivotal moment came when Pera had to save a break point. She capitalised on her let-off by breaking herself next game, and was able to serve out to level the match.

That sapped some of the resistance out of the Japanese, and she was broken three times in the third set as Pera finally put the match to bed. It was easy in the end for her, but it had been anything but in the first two sets.

Zheng v Pera Prediction and Tip

Zheng won their only previous match and, judging by their comparative first round performances, is in the better form of the two. She should maintain her growing reputation as a Grand Slam player.
