Andrey Rublev v Dominic Thiem
Andrey Rublev and Dominic Thiem played several times including quite recently in Gijon at the end of last year. The Russian leads 5-3 but that match was the only match played in the last two years. Leading up to this event, Rublev didn’t quite impress with his level but neither did Thiem.
Both are winless leading into the Australian Open but Thiem played in the final here so it would not be crazy to think that he might do well here. Rublev should thrive in these conditions, especially with his powerful and flat groundstrokes.
Even so, it’s widely expected that Rublev wins this match because he’s been far better lately. Theim certainly can return to his best but he’s not been on that level for a while and it’s hard to imagine him suddenly hitting it here.
Rublev should win but I could see him losing a set so if you want to risk it a bit, look for Thiem to win at least one set, perhaps even more.
Tip: Rublev to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Thanasi Kokkinakis v Fabio Fognini
Thanasi Kokkinakis got a really solid draw to see his Australian Open journey start off in the right way. He played some super solid tennis in Adelaide in the past two weeks and looks set to continue that here. He hasn’t shined in Melbourne over the years but he’s rarely been this healthy.
Fognini played only one match leading up to this one and it was a defeat. He played Kokkinakis twice losing both matches. The most recent one was in Geneva last year on clay and Kokkinakis won that one. This should be a win for Kokkinakis.
He’s playing better, he’s at home and he’ll be in a lot of trouble without at least a 3rd round here. Unless he wins some major points here, Kokkinakis will be back on the challenger tour and he’ll really like to avoid that fate.
I expect him to win it and I think he can even do it in straight sets. It’s quite risky but worth a try because Fognini is unlikely to fight for every point.
Tip: Kokkinakis to win in straight sets: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Matteo Berrettini v Andy Murray
For the second major in a row, we’ll be seeing Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini play. They played in New York and Berrettini was able to win that match. They also played in the Stuttgart final in 2022 and Berrettini won that match as well.
In each match, Murray was able to win a set and we’ll probably see that once more in this one. Murray admitted before the match that he’s feeling much better this year than last year and now it’s time to prove. He can certainly make things interesting but I see no way for him to win the match.
The Berrettini serve is too good and Murray can’t keep up with that. The key to remaining in the match for him will be to serve well but he was not able to do that last year.
If he can I see a way for him to make this a match that will last over three sets but otherwise no. Berrettini is still the likely winner in any case. He’s been too good in Australia so far to mess it up.
Tip: More than three sets in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
