Victoria Azarenka v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Azarenka Moves Past Kenin

In the battle of former Australian Open champions, it was the experienced Belarusian Victoria Azarenka who prevailed over Sofia Kenin on the first day of the Slam.

Azarenka was tested and sailed through only by the slimmest of the margins. The 33-year-old needed two hours to beat Kenin 6-4, 7-6(3), dishing out seven aces and winning 75% of the points behind the first serve. She committed 27 unforced errors to Sofia’s 38 – something that made all the difference in this closely contested affair.

As a two-time champion in Melbourne, Victoria hasn’t won a major since 2013. Her last singles final on the grand stage came in the 2020 US Open.

She started the new season with a quarterfinal showing in Adelaide 1, losing to Czech youngster Linda Noskova 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(6). Her next event was Adelaide 2 where she fell to Veronika Kudermetova in the opener.

Azarenka closed the 2022 season at 24-13, ending with a semifinal stint in the WTA 1000 Guadalajara. She hasn’t won a title since the 2020 Cincinnati Open.

Podoroska Beats Jeanjean

Nadia Podoroska, currently ranked World No. 191, started with a simple 6-0, 6-3 win over Leolia Jeanjean in the first round. She was originally slated to play Ajla Tomljanovic, but the Aussie pulled out of the tournament with an injury.

That may have been a blessing in disguise for the Argentinean as Tomljanovic likely would have proven to be a more formidable opponent than Jeanjean.

So far in 2023, she has only played in the United Cup, losing her singles fixtures to Petra Martic and Caroline Garcia.

The 25-year-old did not enjoy a particularly impressive spell in 2022; she ended with 21-15 with just one silverware – the runner-up trophy from ITF San Bartolome de Tirajana. Her other highlight was reaching the semifinal in the Chennai Open.

Azarenka v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

While Azarenka is not immune from losing to lower-ranked players, Podoroska should not be too big a task for her. The Argentinean lacks top-tier experience, giving Victoria an easier opening in round two.
