Nishioka Cruises in Round One

Yoshihito Nishioka dispelled any rumours of an injury after retiring a week ago due to some hip discomfort. The Japanese player played a fantastic match to down Mikael Ymer in three sets and it was a continuation of really strong play from him.

A sudden rise last year saw Nishioka establish himself in the top 50 and he even won a trophy. It was a product of him playing a lot of tennis early in the year building his confidence up. He showed all of it against Ymer as he played a really balanced match.

He wasn’t too aggressive but did enough hitting 35 winners. Ymer’s deep return position didn’t allow him more than one ace but that’s not his strength either. He’s mostly reliant on outsmarting his opponents and it’s worked well.

That should continue as he faces a player that is probably overachieving a bit. He’ll need to be careful though as youngsters like that tend to be tricky to handle if they come out confident.

Svrcina Stuns Munar

Beatin Jaume Munar on a hard court is not something special yet it is for Svrcina who is basically foreign to playing in the grand slam main draws.

He entered it after cruising through the qualifiers and then played another strong match to take down a noted clay specialist. Munar has improved on hard courts but the fast conditions were simply not good for him at all. Svrcina faced no issues in this match at all.

He didn’t serve an ace which is no surprise considering how Munar plays but he did play a really composed match which was a bit surprising. He forced his opponent into 50+ unforced errors and that’s something that won’t happen against his next opponent.

Whether he can find something more remains to be seen but it’s not likely. He will need to stay composed as he did against Munar though.

Nishioka v  Prediction and Tip

I can see Nishioka cruise here comfortably because he has enough tricks to break down Svrcina. It’s risky backing him to win in three but I can see it happening.
