Linda Fruhvirtova v Kimberly Birrell Head to Head

Fruhvirtova and Birrell have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Fruhvirtova Beats an Aussie to Face an Aussie

It has taken Fruhvirtova a win over an Australian wildcard entrant to make the second round where she will face a second Aussie wildcard.

Fruhvirtova was on court for just an hour and 14 minutes to demolish Jaimee Fourlis in her opener. She won 6-0, 6-4 despite losing her serve three times in the second set.

In fact, the second set was a bizarre showing in which Fruhvirtova kept dropping her serve after breaking her opponent till they reached the ninth game. In the 10th, serving to stay in the match, Fourlis was broken again – and to love – to go out of the competition.

Interestingly, this was only Fruhvirtova’s second match of the season, having bowed out of the WTA Auckland opener to Emma Raducanu.

Can the 17-year-old make it to her first ever third round at a Grand Slam?

Birrell Shocks Kanepi

Seeded 31st in this tournament, Kaia Kanepi was expected to come through against Birrell, having started out a whopping 1/6 favourite to do so.

And it looked like things were headed Kanepi’s way when she grabbed the first set and then took a 5-4 lead with a break of serve. Birrell showed great grit to break right back, pushing the set into a tie-breaker which she won.

In the third, it was one-way traffic with Kanepi losing her serve twice in a row and then again in the seventh game, crashing to a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 defeat.

Birrell has been to the third round of a Grand Slam once before this, which was in this very tournament in 2019. It was the only time before her Kanepi win she won a round at a major and rather interestingly, had beaten Paula Badosa and Donna Vekic to make the third round.

Can she do that again this year?

Fruhvirtova v Birrell Prediction and Tip

Fruhvirtova might be a favourite here but Birrell’s fighting qualities have come to the fore multiple times in her career. Expect her to put up a similar showing here and as a result of that, a three-setter could be on show.
