Ekaterina Alexandrova v Taylor Townsend Head to Head

Alexandrova and Townsend have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Alexandrova Cruises Past Bonaventure

Alexandrova had entered this year’s Australian Open under a bit of an injury cloud when she withdrew from the Adelaide International second round match against fellow Veronika Kudermetova.

She laid those questions to rest though as Alexandrova carved out a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ysaline Bonaventure in her opening round encounter. Alexandrova was on court for a mere 53 minutes.

The 18th-ranked player faced all of her five break-points in the first set, and even dropped her serve once but by then she had already taken a 5-1 lead. Later in the second, Alexandrova broke Bonaventure two more times to wrap up the encounter.

Alexandrova’s best showing at Australian Open are a couple of third round appearances in 2020 and 2021, with the Russian having lost her opener last year. She has already bettered her performance from the previous season – can she now emulate her best showing?

Townsend Finally Gets on Board

The last time Townsend won a main draw match at a WTA event was in San Jose in August last year. Since then, her performances have generally been tepid apart from the odd competition at the WTA Challenger or the ITF level.

Even this year, Townsend, who was once ranked 61st in the world, fell to opening round losses in the qualifiers of the Adelaide International 1 and Adelaide International 2 tournaments in the lead-up to the season’s first Grand Slam.

So while she was a favourite coming up against Diane Parry in her opener, it might have been that straightforward.

In the end, it turned out to be an easy win though, which is due credit to Townsend who was on court for a mere 58 minutes. She won 6-1, 6-1 to win her first main draw match in nearly five months.

Can she now shock Alexandrova though?

Alexandrova v Townsend Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova, if fit, could prove to be a handful to some of the top players in the world, let alone someone who has been barely winning matches at the highest level. Expect a straight-set rout here.
