Elise Mertens v Lauren Davis Head to Head

Mertens and Davis have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Mertens Overturns Deficit to Send Muguruza Packing

Garbine Muguruza hadn’t exuded a lot of confidence coming into her opener at this tournament, having spoken about how she would try to upset a few of the other top players.

As it turned out, she was drawn to take on Mertens, a world number 32 to Muguruza’s 73rd on the WTA charts and yet again, she fell away in the opener.

This was the fourth time in a row that Muguruza had lost a first round match and 10 since the start of the 2022 season. This time around, it was Mertens who came back from a set down to register the victory.

Mertens, who herself hasn’t been in the best of form, registered a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Muguruza in a match lasting two hours and 33 minutes. At one stage in the second set, Muguruza was serving for the match at 6-5 but her inability to hold her serve cost her dearly.

With Mertens managing an early win here, thereby stalling her own run of poor form, it will be interesting to see if that gives her some confidence against her unseeded second round opponent.

Davis Makes Eight Wins in a Row

Davis was forced to play in the qualifiers of the WTA Hobart after having gotten knocked out of the Auckland Open in the second round. It did not seem to have bothered her too much as she clinched seven wins in a row to lift the title there, all of which came in straight sets.

Which is why she was a favourite coming into her opener here against Danka Kovinic, but at the same time there were question-marks over her fitness. After all, Davis had played seven matches over eight days and to then take to court three days later would have been a challenge.

It did look like that too as Kovinic ran through the first set and then went a break ahead in the second set to lead 4-3.

Davis wasn’t done yet though as she broke right back and then again in the 12th game of the set to tie the scores. And having found her rhythm, Davis then cruised past her opponent to register a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 win in two hours and 24 minutes.

Can she now test the former world number 12?

Mertens v Davis Prediction and Tip

On paper, Mertens is a favourite but on form, we have to tip this in favour of Davis who has won a few matches in recent times. The only concern, again, is how Davis’ body will hold up to play matches on successive days having earlier featured in seven matches in eight days.
