Diego Schwartzman v JJ Wolf Head to Head

Schwartzman and Wolf have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Schwartzman Overcomes Fitness Fears in Opener

Oleksii Krutykh needed qualifying wins to make it through to his maiden Grand Slam main draw and for a while it looked like he might even get better of his Schwartzman here.

After Schwartzman had broken early and cruised through the first set, he fell 2-4 behind in the second before eventually frittering away three set-points to lose the set.

The Argentine quickly regrouped and went 3-0 ahead in the third before wrapping it up. Up a break in the fourth, Schwartzman then dropped his serve but in the tie-breaker that followed he managed to clinch it off his very first match-point.

The match lasted nearly four hours and Schwartzman needed to save 14 break-points in the encounter.

Now coming up against a player who loves this surface more than most others, Schwartzman will have a challenge on his hands.

Wolf Needs Four to Dispel Thompson

The Australian challenge of Jordan Thompson ended in the first round itself but not before Wolf had been taken to four sets in the encounter.

Wolf defeated Thompson 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in three hours and 27 minutes to win his first ever match at the Australian Open. Having never made the main draw here prior to this season, Wolf took advantage of Thompson’s poor second serve to dish out this loss.

The 67th-ranked Wold broke his opponent in the fourth game of the first set and then lost his own serve in the fourth game of the second. At one set apiece, Wolf went on to save five break-points in the third game of the third set before taking the lead when Thompson failed to hold on to his serve at 4-5.

The fourth set proved to be a keen tussle with Thompson losing the early advantage and then his serve at 5-6.

Wolf could have a good shot here against Schwartzman, especially given how dodgy the Argentine’s form has been in hardcourt competitions in recent times.

Schwartzman v Wolf Prediction and Tip

While Schwartzman is the seeded player here, we are tipping Wolf to cause an upset and move into round three here. Will need more than three sets.
