Davidovich Fokina Survives Five-Setter

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won a five-set thriller against Alexander Bublik in the first round on Tuesday.

The world no. 32, who reached round 2 of the tournament in both his previous two appearances in Melbourne, needed three hours and 12 minutes to win the seesaw opener.

Davidovich Fokina, who was a quarterfinalist in Adelaide-2 last week, made a very quick start on Tuesday, bageling Bublik in the first set. The Kazakh, ranked no. 36th in the world, found his range in the second set and eventually won the set by dominating the tiebreak.

Bublik then fought back from a break down to take the third set. Having thrown away a brilliant start, Davidovich Fokina then began his comeback in the fourth set.

He got the only break of the fourth set in the final game and then sealed the contest by getting the solitary break of the final set. Davidovich Fokina served just seven aces to Bublik’s 20 and also had six fewer winners to the Kazakh’s 43, but he made far fewer unforced errors in the match.

The Spaniard made 37 unforced errors in the contest, while Bublik made a staggering 76 unforced errors in the entire match.

Thanks to the win, Davidovich Fokina improved to 3-1 in 2023. He will be aiming to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career.

Paul Makes Quick Work of Struff

Tommy Paul made a brisk start with a straight sets opening round win over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

The American, who reached the third round of the competition on his debut in 2020, has now reached the second round for the fourth consecutive year.

Paul struck 20 aces, 28 winners and made just 8 unforced errors in the match to knock out the German qualifier 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

The 25-year-old, who featured in plenty of quarterfinals last year, had come into the tournament with a 1-1 record in Adelaide. Against Struff Paul converted half of the 10 break points that he held and saved two of teh three that he faced.

The world no. 35 faces an extremely tough second round opponent but will be happy by the fact that Davidovich Fokina’s match was a mentally draingin one, while his win over the German was a quick affair.

Davidovich Fokina v Paul Prediction and Tip

Davidovich Fokina has been in better form in 2023. He has also beaten a tougher opponent in the first round and he showed his mettle during the closing stages in the match. Paul’s an equally dangerous player, and therefore it could be another long day for the Spaniard, who should eventually come out on top.
