Taylor Fritz v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

At the highest level they have faced off just once and that encounter came at the Washington Open last season. Fritz had won that in straight sets.

More recently, they were involved in a Kooyong Exhibition competition in the lead-up to this tournament and again, it was Fritz who had come away a winner.

Fritz Stretched by Basilashvili

Having won four of the five matches he played in the United Cup and having led the USA to a title win in the United Cup, Fritz had come into this opening Grand Slam as a bit of a dark horse.

And what that meant was playing the highly-erratic Nikoloz Basilashvili, Fritz was a whopping 1/33 favourite to win their opener.

That’s how it began too, what with Fritz easing past his Georgian opponent in the first two sets. Suddenly, at the start of the third, Fritz dropped his serve and won just five points on Basilashvili’s serve the whole of the set.

He responded well though to the loss of that set, dropping just three points on his own serve across six games before breaking Basilashvili in the 12th game to scoop the encounter in two hours and 38 minutes.

Fritz will hope for a more routine win in the second round as he takes on Popyrin.

Popyrin Registers Comeback Win

In a match that lasted five sets and had three tie-breakers in it, Popyrin came back from two sets to one down to usurp Chun Hsin Tseng in his opener. The match ended a short while after 2 am local time, which could be a factor as Popyrin looks to prepare and be fit for his second round encounter.

What was interesting to see was that Popyrin’s first break of serve came in the fifth set when he went ahead 3-0. He broke once more after that to seal the deal in his favourite.

Popyrin himself faced 10 break-points but only one of them was converted by his opponent with the Aussie’s whopping 31 aces and 89 winners seeing him through.

What Popyrin will want in this second round match is continue serving as well as he did in the first round but to reduce his unforced errors from the 79 mark that was on show against Tseng.

Will Fritz force him into going for those shots early in their rallies though? We think so.

Fritz v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

The manner in which Fritz has played in recent times, he should take this in straight sets but the only thing that could see this get stretched is if Popyrin can keep serving the way he did in the first round. In which case we might see a tie-breaker or two.
