Anett Kontaveit v Magda Linette Head to Head

At the highest level, there have been two meetings between these two and both have won one apiece.

Kontaveit Reverses Losing Start

It hasn’t been the greatest of starts for Kontaveit this season as she lost both her openers in the first two tournaments she featured in this season.

At the Adelaide International 1, Kontaveit had gone down in three sets to Qinwen Zheng while Paula Badosa got the better of her in the second Adelaide tournament. Which is why a victory here in her first round match against Julia Grabher was paramount for her confidence.

And that’s how the cookie crumbled as well, with Kontaveit registering a 6-2, 6-3 win over Grabher.

The world number 19 needed just 70 minutes in her opening workout which saw her lose her serve just once in the encounter – and that when she was 4-0 up in the second set.

Things will get more challenging in the second round for Kontaveit but for now, she will bask in some relief to have overturned a losing run that had seen her four matches in a row, including two late last year.

Linette Sends Sherif Out

Having begun the season on a solid note, Linette looked to have hit a bit of a roadblock when she lost to Madison Keys at the United Cup and then fell in the first round of the Hobart International.

That defeat in Hobart to Alison van Uytvanck might have been due to the exhaustion from having played four matches in a week before that but she now well-rested, she has come back well. In her opener against Mayar Sherif, Linette carved out a 7-5, 6-1 victory in an hour and 27 minutes to seal this berth with Kontaveit.

Linette lost her serve early in the match, getting broken in the third game, but from there on, she managed to hold firm. She broke back in the eighth game and then again in the 12th to clinch the first set.

In the second, the Polish number two raced off to a 5-0 lead before Sherif finally pulled one back but that was never going to be enough.

Can the charged up Linette now take Kontaveit down in this second round encounter?
