Sakkari Survives A Scare

World no. 6 Maria Sakkari survived a second round scare against 18-year-old Russian Diana Shnaider on Wednesday. The Greek finally came through in a nerve-wracking two-hour-and-35-minute contest.

Shnaider, who came through the qualifying rounds, got a break early in the opening set. She then saved three break points in the final game before converting a fifth set point to draw first blood.

In the second, it was the Greek who raced to a 3-0 lead, but the world no. 106 refused to go down easily. She broke Sakkari once, got broken again but remained in the set by breaking back again. Sakkari had three set points on Shnaider’s serve in the 10th but Shnaider saved them all to tie the set at 5-5, but two games later Sakkari broke for a third time in the set to force the decider.

In the final set, Sakkari was the first to break for a 3-1 lead, Shnaider broke back immediately to make it 3-2, but the Greek restored the advantage in the next game and then held on to the lead for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Sakkari had started the campaign with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Yue Yuan.

With the two wins the sixth seed improved her season record to 5-1. She was 3-1 in the United Cup.

A two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Sakkari is playing at the Australian Open for the eighth time. Her best have been two fourth round finishes, one of which was last year.

Zhu Upsets Teichmann

China’s Zhu Lin cruised past a second opponent on Wednesday to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.

The 28-year-old, who is playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the sixth time, breezed past the 32nd seed Jil Teichmann in the second round on Wednesday.

Dominating the match from the start, Zhu raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set before the Swiss finally got on the board. But Zhu wasn’t broken in the set as she took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Zhu maintained her supremacy in the second set as well, breaking the World no. 33 two more times to complete a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Zhu saved all four break points that she faced and converted four of seven to ease into the next round.

The win followed a 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of Rebecca Marino in the first round. Zhu is now 4-2 in 2023. She was a quarterfinalist in Auckland but lost in the opening round in Hobart in the run-up to the first major of the season.

Sakkari v Zhu Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is the superior player but she will be a touch nervous after the nervy second round clash. Zhu on the other hand will be brimming with confidence. The Greek is expected to regroup and come back stronger in the third round.
