Yoshihito Nishioka v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Nishioka Eases Past Qualifier

Yoshihito Nishioka moved into the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in his career after the lefty ended qualifier Dalibor Svrcina’s run in the second round on Wednesday.

The Japanese player converted 6 of 13 break points and saved 1 of 3 as he ousted the Czech player 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in just an hour and 47 minutes.

It was the second straight match in which Nishioka dominated from start to finish. The Japanese had earlier beaten Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round.

The two wins have improved the Japanese to 5-1 in 2023. He had started the season with a run to the semifinals in Adelaide and now finds himself in the Round of 32 at the Australian Open for the second time.

Earlier he had made it that far in 2020, but couldn’t advance. Now he has a chance of winning on Friday and making a last 16 debut in a Grand Slam.

The world no. 33 is also coming off his best season at the tour level. In 2022, the 27-year-old finished with a winning record of 19-17 and reached two finals, finishing runner-up at the Washington Open and winning the title in Korea, for a second career title.

McDonald Knocks Out an Injured Nadal

After winning a dramatic five-set opener, Mackenzie McDonald took down the top seed and defending champion Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Australian Open.

The match took an unfortunate turn for the 22-time Grand Slam champion when he injured his hip late in the second set. A trainer attended Nadal on the sideline, and then he left the court for a medical timeout.

On return, Nadal clearly showed signs of the injury as he went down to the American 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 32 minutes. Despite the situation, McDonald said closing out the contest was a difficult task as a player of Nadal’s calibre never gives up.

Ranked no. 65 in the world, the 27-year-old McDonald had survived an epic four-hour first round contest against World no. 49 Brandon Nakashima. After taking a two-sets-to-love lead, McDonald saw Nakashima come back into the contest and force the decider before he edged his compatriot in the final set to clinch the contest 7-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-7, 6-4.

McDonald, whose best at the Australian Open was a fourth round finish in 2021, is in the third round of the tournament for just the second time in his career.

As far as his current form goes, he is 4-2 in 2023, having played one and lost one in both the Adelaide tournaments.

Nishioka v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Nishioka is the favourite in this contest. He has dominated the rivalry over the years and won their most recent battle only a couple of weeks ago. But McDonald is coming off a huge win, even if it came against an injured Nadal. So he wil be high on confidence and may put up a stern resistance in the third round contest.
