Aryna Sabalenka v Elise Mertens Head to Head

There have been eight previous meetings between these two players including their first in Lugano in a WTA 125 tournament. Sabalenka leads the head to head 6-2 which includes five successive wins in their last five matches.

Sabalenka Routs Rogers in Second Round

Continuing from where she had left off in the first round against Tereza Martincova, Sabalenka had no problems in overcoming Shelby Rogers in the second round of the tournament.

She routed her American opponent 6-3, 6-1 in a match that didn’t last even an hour and a half.

Enduring seven aces, Sabalenka slammed 32 winners past the hapless Rogers while only suffering from 18 unforced errors in the encounter. In doing so, the Belarusian number one overcame a slow start whereby she fell 3-1 behind in the opening set.

The turnaround was so drastic that Rogers didn’t quite know what hit her as Sabalenka won 11 of the next 12 games from there on.

Another win here will take Sabalenka to her best ever showing at the Australian Open – a fourth round appearance which she has managed twice in a row coming into this season.

Mertens Puts an End to Davis’ Run

Lauren Davis was having the time of her season as she entered this year’s Australian Open on the back of a title win on the WTA Tour. And having beaten Dank Kovinic in her opener, she would have fancied her chances against the dodgy form of Mertens.

Which is also why there wasn’t too much to choose between Mertens and Davis going into the encounter. Bookmakers had Mertens as a slight favourite at 8/11 but that doesn’t count for a lot.

What did count was the seven aces that Mertens hit to go with her 11 winners. And while both players had the same differential between winners and unforced errors (a poor minus four), it was Mertens’ ability to win the big points that stood her in a good stead here.

She faced just one break-point in the match while breaking her opponent four times and in doing so, won 6-4, 6-3 to set up this meeting with Sabalenka.

Mertens has already beaten Garbine Muguruza in the first round but in current form, Sabalenka will be a bridge too far.

Sabalenka v Mertens Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka should not have a lot of worries here and we could be looking at a straight-set victory for the world number five.
